A story of success: The NRJ-group!

All of us do hear music sometimes or maybe more often. Nearly all of us do listen to radio stations. But do you really listen to the best station? To a programme made with commitment and interest? The largest and most succesfull european chain of radio-stations, named NRJ / ENERGY, consists of such stations! Oriented on building up a group of professional radio-stations with real interest in their listeners, the NRJ-group can truly be called the largest network of radio-stations troughout europe!

In June 1981 a normal young man in France dreamed of building up a radiostation. On July 1st, 1981, after Francois Mitterand was elected, this young man optmistically installed some hardware with a transmitter at the window in the kitchen of his parisian appartment on Rue Du Télégraphe. That´s, when Jean-Paul Baudecroux (*1946/03/11) got the founder of NRJ. The name was given as abbreviation of the concept: "Nouvelle Radio Jeunesse" ("New Radio for the Youth"), mainly young people do make a programme for mainly young people (the target group of listeners is aged between 14 and 39).

Four years later, in 1985, NRJ was already the leading private-radio on the FM-sector in France. So the NRJ-group decided to build up a second programme under the name CherieFM in 1987.

In 1988 NRJ had 100 (onehundred!) stations through France and expanded towards Belgium and Switzerland.

To open the company to the public NRJ went to the Paris stock exchange in 1989 and started a third programme "Rire&Chanson" one year later.

On August, 12th 1991, one decade after NRJ was founded in Paris, the first german station started it´s programme in Berlin. The germans would had problems with the NRJ ("Nouvelle Radio Jeunesse") and so with ENERGY an english name was found that sounds very equal to the pronunciation of the french N-R-J, but is not needed to be explained. Currently there are 13 stations in germany.

In 1993 the first swedish station (also under the english name ENERGY) was started in Stockholm (now there are 21 swedish stations).

In 1998 the NRJ Group bought RMC-Radio Monte Carlo (march) and Radio Nostalgie (july).

On July 15, 2001 NRJ celebrated its 20th birthday at the NRJ Group's headquarters in Paris.

If you have a digital satellite receiver and you are able to receive Astra, you can listen to NRJ France on 12.207 GHz, 27.500 Msymb/sec. or 38014705 bits/sec. FEC ¾. PID: 1FFF 00EC (hex) / 8191 0236 (dec).

Currently the NRJ-group is present in europe with much more than 300 stations. Do you know a radio-programme with more stations?
